  Farm Activities

West Lermouth offers a selection of activities within walking distance of the cottages. These include:

Tennis

An all-weather tennis court is at your disposal, together with a selection of racquets and balls, at no additional charge.

Fishing

There is a fully-stocked trout reservoir on the farm. You can spend the morning fishing from the rowing boat or bank and enjoy a picnic lunch in the fishing hut, overlooking the water. With luck you might be able to spot otters or even a kingfisher.

If you don't know how to fish but would like to try your hand, we can arrange the loan of tackle as well as some tuition to get you started.

If the children aren't interested in fishing with a rod they could try their hand with a net. The magic of catching pond skaters, mayfly nymphs, sticklebacks and other small pond-life has kept children at West Learmouth captivated for many years.

If you'd like to try some river fishing during your stay, a day's fishing on the Tweed can easily be arranged. Click here for more information.

Wildlife

West Learmouth is a member of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme run by DEFRA and Bob has sown 6 metre grass margins around many of his fields to encourage wildlife. Explore one of designated walks which pass along the field margins and you may catch a glimpse of the many birds and animals which share their home with the resident cattle, horses and chckens. Pipistrelle bats, roe deer, barn and tawny owls, badgers and even otters have been spotted within the bounds of West Learmouth.

Walking

Running through West Learmouth there is a network of permissive bridleways and public rights of way. Combining both of these it's possible to enjoy various circular walks, bicycle or horse rides.

The longest walk will take you 4.1 miles to Cornhill on Tweed, our closest village, along the former Kelso to Berwick-upon-Tweed railway line (easy walking). There are fine views and plenty of wildflowers to look out for. Once there you can stop-off at the Collingwood Arms for lunch (*closed for refurbishment until autumn 2007) or visit the well-stocked Village Shop before returning to the farm using a public right of way which crosses the fields.

There are site maps in various locations around the farm which show you different Conservation Walks you may follow.

Cycling

A number of cycling routes begin at West Learmouth which all the family can enjoy. If you have small children and don't want to go far, why not just cycle to the reservoir for a picnic. Should you wish to go further afield you can cycle for several miles along the old railway line, leaving at one of three places depending on how energetic you feel, before returning along a farm road.

We can provide a range of bikes, but don't guarantee that we'll have all sizes and can't supply protective headgear, so please let us know in advance.
